We are all familiar with the old saying, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink,” right?
Well, this is apparently true of cats too. A couple of weeks ago we replaced our cat “fountain” with a new and improved model. We thought they would be thrilled since we removed their old fountain a month ago and had them drinking water from a bowl.
Ruby did not care from the bowl. She demanded water from the faucet in the bath tub. She is used to that and it is more convenient – since she loves to “hang out” at the tub. Her first impression of the new fountain was uncertainty.
Skippy taking a closer look at the new fountain and sniffing the filtered water.
Skippy touching the water.
Alice investigating the new contraption.
Ruby slowly inched closer to the fountain. She finally drank from it an hour later.
She still prefers water from the faucet.

We are often like that. Our Heavenly Father provides for us in ways we did not imagine and we ignore His provision. It doesn’t seem familiar, it’s inconvenient, “this isn’t what I prayed for!” But just as we wanted to provide healthy, filtered water for the cats and they were somewhat hesitant to drink. Our Heavenly Father’s ways are higher than our ways. He knows what is best.
Just as the woman at the well came to the well for physical water, Jesus gave her something far more important. The Living water! Jesus said,
“Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13-14
He was speaking of Himself. He is the Living Water.
“I will pour water on him who is thirsty, And floods on the dry ground…”
Isaiah 44:3-4
