We Celebrate Today Because He Lives!

Miss Madison

As a child, Easter meant a new dress, hat, gloves, shoes, purse and everything that a little girl needs. Of course, there was the filled basket of candy (I gave most of mine to Mom. I just liked anything with marshmallow or carmel.) and a pretty flower to wear. Orchids were popular then. Also fun Easter Egg hunting is still popular today.

Dying the eggs were so much fun; I remember the smell today. But what does that have to do with Easter? It doesn’t really. The fun traditions have nothing to do with the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We had much to celebrate that first Easter as believers. For the first time, I realized what Easter is truly about. It is about the great sacrifice that paid for my sin on the cross. Jesus willingly gave His life for you, for me, for those who followed Him, for Peter who denied Him, for the scoffers who cried “Crucify Him!” and for the thief on the cross who believed Christ – the sinless, perfect Son of God didn’t deserve death on the cross but that he and the other thief did deserve this death.

He was buried in a borrowed tomb which was sealed with a stone too big and heavy for man to move. Three days later, He arose from the tomb. He lives! And so my friend, Happy Resurrection Day. We celebrate because He lives! (Sing “One Day” with me!) Just think, He loves you! Isn’t this Joy so much better than candy? I know it is!

Love,

Kathy

Majesty

f7de73123e48c4498df3b4341cceb384How Majestic

Delighting in His Majesty!

When you hear the word Majesty, what comes to mind? A king in robe and crown; surrounded by people who must do his bidding? Is the background that of splendor with the man sitting on a throne holding a golden scepter?

The word majestic comes to mind whenever looking at a sunset, the beautiful stars that sparkle like diamonds against a black velvet cushion, or a lovely sunrise whose beauty makes one breathless.

Or perhaps, if you love conservative Christian music as I do, you may think of the publishing company Majesty Music. Ron Hamilton wrote a beautiful song many years taken from this verse. It has been years since I sang it but I still remember hearing him sing this at a conference. The cd is available on the Majesty Music or Ron Hamilton facebook page and on his website. Look for the Rejoice in the Lord cd.

I was trying to locate the lyrics or more specifically, a video of Ron singing How Majestic is Thy Name. Instead, so many wonderful hymns and spiritual songs were listed in the search and I have spent about two hours just singing praises to The Lord. Thinking of His power, majesty and of His great love for us. It still humbles me to think that He – the creator of the universe; the One who spoke the world into existence loves me. I feel as the shepherds must have felt when they – the lowest workers of their day, were visited by an angel of God announcing the birth of the long awaited one; the Savior, which is Christ our Lord. (Luke 2)

Remember how they must have been frightened, The glory of the Lord shown around about them and they were sore afraid.” the Glory of God” had once caused Moses to cover his face so that those who looked upon him would not be blinded. The same Light that illuminates Heaven so that there is no need for sun nor moon in Heaven. And then they were serenaded by a Heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth; peace, good will toward men.”

The most wonderful experience for these weathered, lowly shepherds that night was that they were able to bow down and worship the babe – Emmanuel (which means “God with us”), our Savior, the long awaited Messiah, the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world, our sacrifice, the Good Shepherd, Redeemer, the Light of the world, the Bread of Life, God in flesh. The one who came to bear their sins and mine on the cross of Calvary.

On Christmas Eve, at our wonderful service, my mind kept going to Isaiah 53 where His death is prophesied. “He was led as a lamb to the slaughter and as a sheep before it’s shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth.  This my friends, is majesty. This is love. Oh, how my heart swells with love for Him whenever I read this chapter. You see, it was written long before He was born. He inspired the Words (literally were God breathed.) I look at the cross – the death, burial and resurrection of the precious, sinless Son of God and praise Him.  And then I look forward to the rapture when we shall meet Him in the clouds and so shall we ever be with the Lord. What splendor!

He will come again as The King of King and Lord of Lords. Every knee shall bow and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

That tiny little virgin born baby is all of this. He is Majesty.  One song kept popping up in the search and I must have played it three times tonight.  http://youtu.be/CHZcgK43Sr0 Bow The Knee.

As we begin this new year, lets reflect on His Majesty and bow the knee. He alone is worthy of our praise.

I must share this one thing. As I was reviewing the videos, dwelling on the meaning of the songs and singing along, my heart felt it would break as one of the videos showed Ron Hamilton directing a choir at what was listed as Music College. Why should this bring tears? For as long as I can remember, singing was always a part of my life. When I received Christ as my Savior in 1968, I promised I would sing only for Him as He opened the doors. And He opened many doors! My prayer through the years prior to singing has always been, “may they hear Your voice, Lord not mine – that You will be glorified.”  Because of poor health, it has been a long time since I have been able to sing solos and years since I had the joy of singing with a choir. Oh, that He may allow me to sing in the choir in Heaven some day! Until then, I will continue to sing to Him in devotions, in prayer, as I wash dishes…

So friends, as you bow the knee before Him in prayer, if He prompts you, sing with the joy of knowing Him and His majesty.

Childhood Friends

I recently had the blessing of meeting an old friend on facebook! We were best friends when we were students at Jamison Elementary School in Roanoke.

Jamison Elementary School, Roanoke, VA

Although this school no longer exists and has been replaced with a Fire Station, our memories of this wonderful old school are still alive! In fact, there is a facebook group of Jamison alumni where we share photos and memories of days gone by. The school was built long ago and many of us remember fine architectural details not present in building today. For example, the girl’s restroom even had a large round water fountain so that thirty girls could wash our hands at once! It had a ring around the base to step on instead of a regular faucet. Tall windows, intricate iron scroll work on the banisters going upstairs, old fashioned lights that hung down from the ceiling with white globe and desks with ink wells. Ah yes, I remember it well! The best part was the people who helped shape our lives. Both staff and friends that filled our minds with wonderful memories!

One of those dear friends is Kathie T. Kingery.  Kathie, her sister Robyn and I used to walk to the bus stop together every morning and back home again. Chatting and laughing the entire time.  We spent hours in the summer looking at the green stamp catalog – making lists of the things we wanted to purchase. What fun! It was so long ago and yet just seems like yesterday.  I had always wondered what happened to my friends. Thanks to the internet, I know.

The best part was that I was able to reconnect with my friend, Kathie Trent Kingrey who is a photographer.  She is sharing some of her wonderful pictures of Virginia with us. Even in the fifth grade, I could see that she had a flair for style! =-)

Snow!

A snowy day in Lynchburg, VA

After days of rain and much anticipation, the snow finally arrived. I was sure we wouldn’t get any snow today since the temperature didn’t drop below freezing. It was in the low forties most of the day and finally the temperature dropped into the thirties and beautiful white flakes graced our skies after four in the afternoon. It snowed a few hours and in our neighborhood, it still looks like a pretty white blanket covering bushes, trees, sidewalks and yes, the roads. According to the television, Lynchburg, Virginia received over four inches. I am sure children are cheering – schools are closed tomorrow and many businesses have delayed opening until mid-morning.

I don’t know what it is about snow that is so exciting. After all, it causes inconveniences, delays and hazardous driving. And yet, the mere mention of the fluffy white stuff takes me back to my childhood. Playing in the snow, freezing fingers and toes, riding the sleigh downhill with friends and family. Coming inside to a nice warm house, smelling of just baked cookies, hot cocoa and homemade soup simmering on the stove.

My thoughts returned to my grandparents home in the Midway section of Vinton, Va in 1964. I spent every weekend with my grandparents, since I still had not gotten used to the idea of living with Mom and my stepfather in Garden City. (Just a few miles away but to a child, it seemed like we had moved to the other side of the world.) Of course, my preteen aunt, two good friends and two cousins made trips to stay with my grandparents even more enjoyable – especially when it snowed. We had a great hill for sleigh riding!

It snowed that weekend. Wonderful, beautiful, fluffy snow. My Aunt, cousins, friends and neighbors had a wonderful time building snowmen and riding sleighs down the steep hill. When we came back inside, however, the aroma of that house will forever be ingrained in my memory. Granddaddy had cooked that day. Pinto beans, fried potatoes, cornbread, slaw and Granny had made my favorite cake. To this day, that fragrance takes me back to that day.

I wasn’t thrilled to leave on Sunday afternoon when Mom and Jerry came to pick me up but then Mom reminded me that my new cousins, Pam, Donna and Tammy were coming over to play. What a day!

It seems like we had a lot of snow in the sixties – or perhaps it was just a lot of wonderful memories!

Hope you have a beautiful, snowy, memory-making weekend!

Blessings,

Kathy

A Birthday Surprise Conclusion

A Birthday Surprise Conclusion

Isabel joined her family in Papa’s car just as the sun was
beginning to set upon the day. “Thank you, Papa, for such a
beautiful day. I’ll never forget it.”
Isabel cuddled Raymond in her arms and sat back in her seat to remember her first birthday
without Mama, and yet, Mama’s presence seemed to permeate
the day. She breathed a prayer of thanksgiving for Mama, for
Papa, and for a loving family and friends, asking a special blessing
upon each person.

Isabel’s Birthday Surprise Part 3

Isabel’s Birthday Surprise
Part III

“This is the best day we have had in a long time. Thank
you so much for making my birthday special,” Isabel said as
her birthday cake was presented after supper. Not only were
there gifts for Isabel, but also there were trinkets for each of the
children, including the babies, who were happy just playing
with the paper and boxes.

“This is just like Christmas,” Jimmy said. He jumped up
and down with excitement. “Except without the Christmas tree
and the snow.” Everyone joined him in laughter.
Before she had time to blow out the candles, a car horn
sounded outside. “Who could that be,” Jim said as he answered
the front door.

“Only your best friend in the world,” said a cheerful voice
from the foyer.
“Sally Anne!” Isabel ran to greet her friend and found that
she was not alone. She had brought her parents, a new baby
brother, Cookie, and Arlene Mason.
“Arlene, this is a surprise,” Isabel said as she tried to hide
her shock. “Thank you for coming.”
“You are welcome, Isabel,” Arlene said. “I came to apologize
for being so mean to you before. I hope you will forgive me.”
Isabel sensed that she really meant it. “Of course, Arlene,”
she said. She hugged her new friend. “This is the best birthday
ever. Come inside everyone, and have some cake and ice cream
before the boys eat it all.”

“Isabel,” Mrs. Albright said, “we have something for you
from your mother. She wanted you to have this. She made the
arrangements months ago, before the twins were born. I hope
you like it.” Mrs. Albright handed Isabel a large, handsomely
wrapped gift box that was tied with a large, satin bow.

Isabel’s hands trembled as she pulled the ribbon and opened
the box. Inside the tissue paper lay a beautiful drop-waist dress,
just as Isabel had seen in the windows at the stores in Roanoke.

“How did you know?” Isabel said. She choked back her tears.
“Your mama asked me to buy the fabric and pattern for her
several months ago. She did some sewing for me to pay for it,
even though I offered to pay the cost myself. She wanted to make
it for you, but she fell ill. So I had my dressmaker make it for
you. I knew Lizzie would want you to have it for your birthday.
No one in the school will have this fabric…it came all the way
from New York.”

“Oh, thank you, Mrs. Albright!” She ran to her benefactress
with a tearful hug. “This is the most beautiful dress I have ever
owned. Mama would be so happy if she could see it.”
“Well, keep looking, and you will discover a few more
surprises from Sally Anne, Mr. Albright, and me.”

Isabel lifted the dress and underneath found beautiful
gifts to match the dress. “Oh, look at this beautiful shawl. It
goes perfectly.” Isabel examined the lace wrap. “There is also a
handbag and a headband. Thank you so much. You were too
generous.”

“There are also some under things,” Sally Anne said, “but
you don’t want to show those.” Her announcement brought
laughter and good-natured teasing from the Greene boys.

“This isn’t much, Isabel,” Arlene said. She held out a small,
white box. “I saw it in the store, and it reminded me of you. I
hope you like it.”
Isabel opened the box and found a small pin with daffodils
hand painted on it.
“Oh, Arlene,” Isabel said. “It is lovely. How did you know
I like daffodils?”

“Well,” Arlene said, “I saw you pick one at your mama’s
funeral and put it into your Bible. I thought the flower must
remind you of her.”
“It does,” Isabel said with tears in her eyes, “and now they
will remind me of you too. Thank you for remembering.”

“We miss you, Isabel,” Arlene said.
“I miss you too,” Isabel said. She realized she had even missed
Arlene Mason.

“OK,” Aunt Jenny said with a box camera in hand.
“Isabel, I want to get a photograph of you with your little friends
so you can remember this day. Then we will take photographs
of everyone before it gets too dark.”

So Isabel stood with her friends for the moment to be
captured on film and cherished forever.

Mom’s Birthday

Cake by Ashley's CakesToday is my mother’s birthday.

“Barbara Jane” was born April 17, 1936 and won a baby contest when she was one year old. Her parents, Harry and Isabel gave her a lot of attention and obviously, spoiled her rotten! By the time she was only ten months old, Barbara Jane had a little sister, Shirley Ann. As you can see, she became attached to dolls and became a little Mommy to her baby dolls.

I can still remember her taking me to Lakeside Amusement Park. We rode the "grown-up rides" that twirled, rolled back and forth; causing peals of laughter as Mom tried not to squish me! She smelled like Persian Wood perfume, powder and cotton candy.

Mom loved being a student at Lee Junior High School. She still talks about the friends she made at this cozy school. She can name all of her teachers and especially loved her Glee Club teacher who encouraged her to sing alto.

In 1966, she and Dad Hinchee finally gave me a baby sister

And then a baby brother!

                                                                                                     Singing Hymns with her daughters

Three years ago, Mom lost her sight due to a virus. The doctors told her that her sight might return within two years but it hasn’t. She would love to continue doing all of the wonderful things she is used to. Now it is her turn for us to do for her. Dad Hinchee is a remarkable caretaker and we are so thankful for him! He deserves a reward for all that he does.

Now, Mom sits on the porch listening to the birds, smelling her flowers, appreciating the breeze on her face and praising the Lord for the little things often unnoticed.  Her day is filled with Christian radio (BBN) and listening to audio books.

I am sure she is also praying for her children, grandchildren and her two great grandsons!

We surprised her on her seventy-fifth birthday with a party. Family and friends gathered for a wonderful celebration. I wish we could do that every year! Filling the house with laughter and chatter really brightened her spirits.

This reunion reminds me that one day, we will be reunited with loved ones who have

gone ahead long ago. There will be no more sorrow, no pain, no blindness, no more death but we will see Him, our Savior, face to face. What a wonderful day that will be! Until then, we will rejoice for all that He has given us. His love, salvation, new life, joy, peace, grace for every trial, the sweet fragrance of flowers, the singing of birds, love of our family and for Mom!

We love you, Mom!

Thank you friends for sharing in my mother’s birthday celebration. Mom has made so many birthdays special for us, I couldn’t resist giving her a tribute today.

Until next time,

Kathy
